Austria Ski Weekend

Learning how to ski has been my goal for several years now (I’m normally a snowboarder). I gave it a shot over the weekend down in Austria in the Brixen in Thale area. Wasn’t too pretty to watch, but I managed to get down a red run (American blue) by the middle of my second day. Only had one crash where I lost both skis. There’s a couple small hills in the area here where one can ski, so hopefully I’ll get out a few more times before the winter ends.

Only took a couple photos as my skiing wasn’t too safe for the camera.

That’s funny Cody! I grew up skiing, switched to snowboarding and then for fun would take out rental skis when I worked at the ski resorts. It always was a yard sale because being on two boards felt so foreign after 9 years on one board. My legs didn’t know what to do 🙂 Have fun!!

PS: Have you been to Tasmania? I am going in March and am seeking out tips and pointers – where to go, what to skip. Let me know….

Ya, skiing is a bit strange after having only ever been on a snowboard (and surfboard, skateboard – ‘sideways’ standing sports). I want to get into Alpine touring, but I think I’ll need a few more seasons on the piste before I can get near anything in the back country. It was actually quite embarrassing, having 3-4 year old kids with no fear just blasting by me like I was standing still, well I probably was just standing still most the time.

Nope, not been to Tasmania at all. How long you going for?

Just remember “make a pizza, make a pizza”. That is what I would tell little kids when I was working at the ski resort 🙂

Going for about 20 days – it was all I could take off of work. Heading to Melbourne for a few days, then Tasmania for about 10 days, then back to Melbourne. I’m stoked – haven’t left the country since Peru in ’03 so it’s time. If you know of anyone who has been and wants to give pointers, just pass along my email address. Thanks Cody!

Haha… LOVE skiiing!!! That last trip with you was too fun!!!!

Hopefully I’ll get one decent trip this year with some freshies.

    Keep having fun for me!

The only problem here is that ‘powder snow’ is almost a bad word, they don’t like it for some reason. Though the nice thing is, I can get to various parts of Austria faster than getting from SB to the crappy snow at Mt. High! And where we were, a day ticket for some huge mountain area was surprisingly about half the price of Mammoth mtn. (but gas is 3x the cost)
