Boulder

After one of the days climbing last week, I was shown this cool bouldering area on a hilltop near town. I had seen it in a bouldering dvd they had made and thought it looked pretty cool, so I wanted to scout the place out a bit for taking some pictures one of these days. The main boulder problem I was interested in shooting was already in the shade by the time we got there in the late afternoon, but a few other rocks were still in the sun…

I also have some cool ideas about making time-lapse climbing ‘movies’ with my camera, so I thought I’d do a quick experiment. Came out pretty cool for a quick little test. Click here for a direct link if it doesn’t load.

Frankenjura Climbing – Leupoldsteiner Wand

Got out of the house and had some fun shooting climbing during the last week.  These guys are way good!

A couple pics of bouldering sometime later. Forest was a bit dark so camera was at ISO 2000, but I kind of like the grainy texture. Reminds me of shooting Kodak Tri-X back in the day, well, not that far back.

Wanaka

Lake Wanaka as seen from near the summit of Roy’s Peak. It was a cold and wet spring day when my buddy Mikkel and I decided to hike to the top, with the hope that the rain would hold for a little while longer. Nearly to the top, a gentle snow began to fall. One of those snows where it seems that the world almost becomes silent, and everything is still, except for the light flakes landing across your face. Unfortunately, the snow turned to rain once we descended in elevation, good thing Wanaka suffers no shortage of pubs for a warm meal and a pint or two.

My first trip to Wanaka would be a short one of a few day, but it became one of those places that I would return to again and again. In the Autumn, I spent several amazing weeks climbing here with a good group of people. The days were often crisp and clear with clouds coming during the night. Each morning the peaks would have a little dusting of snow, getting lower and lower as the days carried on. All around we were surrounded by the beautiful golden colors and light of the Autumn; endless days climbing under the southern sun. I stayed as long as I could, but not long enough, now that I look back on it…

Spring is Here

It seems I have survived my first winter in Europe. The days are getting longer, birds are singing in the mornings and I even went for a run in shorts and a t-shirt this afternoon. Had a good weekend on Franconian limestone, so I’m a bit sore. Got a trip planned for southern France in a few weeks, and then a trip back up to the Artic where the weather is still a bit sucky, but I want to try and catch some Aurora’s before I’m forced back to milder latitudes.

Return to Golden Bay

Despite the name, Golden bay has been everything but ‘golden’ in the last week. Rain, rain, and a bit more rain. Despite this, a few days on the rock have still be managed. Here’s a few photos of myself at work and play. And no, I dont wear the same black pants every day…

A Week Among Giants

10 days in Mt. Cook national park:

Alright, I guess I should add some words for the first time in a long while. Yes, I’m still alive. Tomorrow I get on a plane for a week in Tahiti. At that time, I’m going to book my flight home, sometime around May 15 give or take. But I wont be home for long, only a few weeks. Then it is north, to follow the summer again, up into the arctic and the midnight sun; which I haven’t seen in 5 long years…

I’ve been up before sunrise every day for the last 2 weeks; bitterly cold in the morning, especially when it had been raining for 3 days straight and all your clothes are wet, with no hope of drying. At which point you give up and goto sleep at 6:30 in the evening, too lazy or tired or cold even to bother cooking dinner; since it will be either rice and or beans in tomato sauce, which you have eaten for the last 4 days straight since all the fresh food you had ran out and your bread went moldy. But even here, the sun returns, and you find yourself 100 meters up the side of a cliff with a bit more to go, watching the next storm approach from the west, hoping the rain will at least wait until you have finished climbing. Its cold and windy, but you cant decide if its worth the effort to pull you jacket out of your pack, since its not that cold. Back to the shelter and within 5 mins the rain starts falling.

How did a picture of me get on here? Careful your monitor doesn’t break!
