Spring snow flurries over Stamsund

One of the cool things about the north is how quickly the weather comes and goes.  One April morning after a night of snow I woke up to nice sunny weather.  First thought of mine was to head up Steinetind (the mountain in the center of the first pic) and take in the view.  Around the half way point, while I was climbing a smaller middle peak the winds picked up as some clouds blew over and brought about 20 minutes of snow.  I huddled down among some rocks and waited for it to pass.  And soon enough, as quickly as it arrived, it was over and I was looking at nice blue skies again and a gently breeze.  now back on my way up the mountain…

Forest Mushrooms

Macro panoramics. Was in the forest looking for cool leaves and to do a little experimentation. Thought these came out interesting. Each pano is 3 separate photos from Nikon 85mm PC tilt/shift lens. It’s hard to choose a focal point for the macros. Sort of have to choose one mushroom you want in focus, and let the rest fall as they may. I think a fill light could have helped a bit as well, maybe I’ll try using a small reflector some time in the future.

New Panoramic Photo Gallery

I have created a new gallery for my panoramic photos: CLICK HERE.

Over the last year or so I’ve been transitioning to shooting more and more panoramics, so I thought it appropriate that I should dedicate a gallery to this format. As of today, it it just shy of 200 images, with more added every week or two.

The gallery is is sorted with the newest appearing first (newest that I upload, not necessarily chronologically, as I process a bit out of order sometimes), so if you feel like browsing every once in a while, you can easily see the new stuff. A few of the images may have appeared on the blog here, but most should be new, unless you spy on my at one of my stock photo agencies. In the coming weeks I may add an RSS feed as well (also for some other galleries that I update frequently, like my German gallery which is approaching 400 photos), but I still have to give it some thought.

3 Years…

…Of this blog passed on Saturday the 11th. It’s had a couple homes in this times and I’ve posted from numerous different countries. In those 1,095 days I’ve only managed 200 posts, so something like once every 5.5 days; something to improve on in the coming year. But I must admit, the farther I am from an internet connection, the happier I seem to be.

I’m not such a good writer, but perhaps I’ll try and write more travel stories/anecdotes in the future. I’ve also logged enough days on the road that perhaps I might try and write a few travel and photography tips as well: Such as keeping your camera gear safe on a night bus from Lithuania to Prague, best places to sleep when you find yourself stranded, where to get a $2 haircut it Czech Republic, Norway on the cheap, etc.

What say you? Keep to pictures only, or throw some more words in?

Saturday morning was a nice one:

More tomorrow. It was a good weekend down south!

Autumn Fields

Friday morning. The van was packed and as I was going to start it I noticed the ignition coil light (diesel) never turned off. Hmmm. Took out the key and tried again, still wouldn’t turn off. Went ahead and started it anyhow, no problem. Go to drive down the street and it wont shift in automatic mode (weird hybrid auto/manual transmission), Bugger. Figured it would probably be best not to drive it. So much for the weekend’s plans of the Allgäu.

So we took a little tour over to burg Hohenstein and a Windbeutel to cure our sorrows. Passed a couple fields on the way.

Isle of Mull

The hour was getting late, sometime around 9:30 at night when we crested a hill. The view:

I’d been looking for a good place park the van for the night, but this sight led me to race down the single lane roads at all too fast of a speed to try and somehow get the the coast.  The sky was one of the most brilliant colors I think I’ve ever seen.  But after nearly 30 minutes of looking for a way to the coast, the light was gone and this was the only shot I could get.  Maybe next time…

Green Fields of Summer

Auerbach on a particularly fine day a few weeks ago. I had gone riding in the forest searching for blueberries, but alas, I was a bit too late and only small ones remained. I was only going to take pictures anyhow, as I’ve been warned not to eat them because the foxes carry a nasty little stomach worm that can’t be cured.

The sun sets earlier and earlier these days, another summer come and soon to be gone in a few weeks. Some of the trees are already showing some colored leaves, a bit too early I would think, but then again, I’m here in the north, so far from home. Though I must say, I’m looking forward to the colors of the fall. Hopefully I can manage a trip down to the Allgäu for some pics, but Franconia here seems a promising location for autumn color. A dream would be to head up to the arctic, then travel south with the progressing autumn over the course of a month or so. Maybe next year, if I’m lucky. Just a dream.

I remember the coming of autumn while back in New Zealand, so beautiful. Each morning I would wake up from my campsite near lake Wanaka and the snow on the mountains would be a little bit lower and it would take a little bit longer for the rock to warm up before we could go climbing. Then one day, a few weeks later, the big snow arrived and the world was white. That was in May.

I remember waiting for the snow in the autumn of 2006. Everyday I kept thinking, “It will come soon, it will come soon…” Traveling south through October and November: Scotland, Wales, England, Germany, cold, but still no snow. Finally, it came in mid December at 2000 meters in the Swiss Alps. Two days of storms and the world was white. That was the start of my first winter in Europe.
